Becoming a Fulbright scholar handed me the world in a way I had never imagined. Places that I had only known on maps or classroom globes became cities I knew like the back of my hand. My favorite coffee shop was not the Starbucks up the road but a corner café in Southeast Berlin. I became a citizen of the world and began to see my responsibility as a critical thinker in new ways. While abroad, I started a spokenword band that I still collaborate with every summer in Germany. Now, I’m a DJ and an educator. To be Black, female, queer and German speaking remains a surprise to everyone I meet and I could never have imagined where the international experience I was afforded at Austin College would have taken me. My life has been forever changed because of my study abroad and Fulbright experiences.
