Emphasis on the role insects have play in human cultures. We will discuss topics such as health and disease, food production, and conservation. Students will learn to identify common insects that they would encounter in their everyday life and understand the basic biology of insects. Students will also practice the scientific process and write about scientific topics using field appropriate evidence.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- identify common groups of insects
- explain the major ecological roles of common groups of insects
- describe how insects impact their lives, the lives of those in their community, and other communities worldwide
- properly collect, preserve, and curate insects for use in a scientific collection
- recognize key aspects of the scientific method
- critically analyze scientific articles
- communicate about controversial topics
- write thesis driven research papers using evidence appropriate for scientific topics
