Description: Who can afford to learn about wine, when a single (decent) bottle costs, $20, $30, or more? A single two hour pairing event or tasting class start at $30 a seat and often exceed $50 a seat. We have the best value answer – take this course, and taste nearly $3000 dollars of wine for about $300! You’ll learn the difference between cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc, and cabernet franc, which wine would best pair with your dinner, and why you sniff the wine but not the cork. This course will demystify the oenophile and grant you access to a new world of wine appreciation and culinary exploration for a fraction of the cost. The course will explore the wine industry from an interdisciplinary perspective that includes viticulture, enology, terroir, geography, economics, and service. Students will learn the science behind fermentation and wine making as well as the physiology of taste and smell in addition to developing life-long skills around wine selection, tasting techniques, pairing wines and food, and determining if wine has spoiled. This course will include local field trips to wineries in north Texas and students will taste over 50 different wines through multiple wine tastings and food pairings. Course enrollment will determine out of pockets costs associated with the course. Registration will be limited to those students with birth dates 1/2/2002 or earlier and students must have valid ID with matching birth date to register.
