For High School Teachers of English and Spanish
July 27-29, 2017
This opportunity presents a unique immersion experience for high school Spanish teachers, as well as teachers of high school language arts. Spanish teachers in Texas can refresh their language skills in an immersion environment while they develop new cultural and technology resources for their students. Language Arts/English teachers can also immerse themselves in English-language sessions about Latino /a culture, literature and film. We have ten spaces available for Spanish teachers, and ten available for language arts teachers. One English teacher and one Spanish teacher will be selected from each high school invited to participate. Teachers must apply as pairs (one English teacher/one Spanish teacher from the same high school).
The Austin College Summer Institute for High School Teachers of English and Spanish aims not only to strengthen the skills of high school Spanish teachers, but develop skills of both Spanish and English teachers working with Hispanic/Latino literature and cultural subjects. Each teacher will receive a certificate that will provide 18 CPE (Continuing Professional Education) hours.
The daily schedule includes target-language workshops in culture, literature, and film with additional cultural activities in the evening. Spanish teachers will speak in the target language, while English teachers will share ideas in English about Latino culture. The atmosphere at the Institute is informal and highly collegial. Teachers will be encouraged to shared ideas with each other.
Institute participants reside in the Jordan Language House, also the location for the workshops. This unique complex, which houses modern language students during the academic year, has language immersion and cultural interaction as its raisons d’être. Four language pods surround a common courtyard. Each language section has bedroom suites and a living room outfitted with multi-standard video equipment. Multi-media classrooms, a technology development room, and a residential computing facility support the house programs. The combination of ready access to state-of-the-art technology and a supportive environment of immersion in the target language make the Summer Institute a unique opportunity for professional growth. Our workshop curriculum is aligned with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), and the CPE credits are TEA-approved.
Participants arrange their own travel.
