Reason and Season for Giving

Today is Giving Tuesday--a day set aside during the busy holiday season to encourage a global movement of generosity. Launched in 2012, #GivingTuesday is a response to retail's Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping. Last year, more than 10,000 organizations in 46 countries came together to celebrate #GivingTuesday.

Online giving makes it easy to give your year-end gift to support the great programs and experiences for Austin College students. Join alumni and friends to demonstrate support for faculty and students who remain engaged in learning and serving others
--on campus and beyond.

Your gift helps support a breadth of experiences from the familiar faculty mentor program to new endeavors such as Advocacy, Mock Trial and Mediation teams. Students have been in competition from Georgia to Arizona, and the 'Roos Audrey Rose '18 recently brought home the College's first award
--for outstanding trial witness portrayal.

More and more real-world experiences like this are helping Austin College students grow--inside and outside the classroom. You help make these transformations possible through your gifts to the College.

With #GivingTuesday here, there’s no better time
--now and throughout December--to demonstrate your generosity.

Give to Austin College by simply going online. Thank you for supporting ’Roo Nation!

Jan Term Brings New Vistas, New Vision

In late December, Austin College's first wave of JanTerm students heads to Europe. They'll join Dr. Hunt Tooley, professor of history, walking World War II battlefields and beaches of Normandy, France.

After travel elsewhere in the region, the group visits Auschwitz in Poland, now designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. January 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the concentration and extermination camp's liberation.

Twenty-two students signed up for Tooley's JanTerm. Another 138 students are pursuing
--out-of-state or out-of-country--intensive, educational opportunities that are a hallmark of Austin College's in-depth learning experiences.

While students at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico take in the West's wide-open spaces and starry nights, 'Roos in Manhattan will view a different sight: The "Starry Night." Compliments of Vincent Van Gogh and Museum of Modern Art.

"Music, Art, and Culture in New York City" JanTerm, taught by Dr. Dan Dominick, associate professor of music, meets initially on campus. First come lessons on art collections, music, architecture, landmarks, and more. Then it's off to the Big Apple.

Dominick hopes students will develop greater cultural appreciation. It may mean simply realizing, he says, "there is something special in taking time to stand in front of a painting and ponder its relevance and meaning."

As January unfolds, other students will embark on additional learning adventures. Three countries--Guatemala, Mexico, and Dominican Republic--will be home for those immersing themselves in Spanish and local culture. Faculty will also take students elsewhere around the globe--Indonesia for some, Scotland for others
--to better understand the past and present.
