College Mourns Death of Chase Gaddy

The Austin College community is saddened by the death of freshman Chase Gaddy of Dallas in a motorcycle accident Wednesday, February 23, in Sherman.

"It is with a heavy heart that I share this sad news with our community," said Austin College President Marjorie Hass. "I know our students, faculty, and staff join me in prayers of comfort for Chase's family and friends."

Jno. E. Owens Conference Addresses Global Business Issues
"Human Capital and Global Business: Implications for the Liberal Arts College" is the focus of the 2011 Jno. E. Owens Conference on Thursday, March 3, at Austin College. The full day of presentations, held in Hoxie Thompson Auditorium of Sherman Hall, is free and open to the public.


Recognition of Light T. Cummins as Texas State Historian
Light T. Cummins, Austin College Guy M. Bryan, Jr., Chair of American History, was appointed State Historian of Texas in May 2009. Austin College celebrates this honor on April 7 on campus. Alumni and friends are invited to join the College community for this special occasion. Cummins' two-year term as State Historian of Texas ends this spring.

President Hass Named "Luminary"
President Dr. Marjorie Hass was honored as a Texas Luminary during the Conference on American Leadership held on February 26 at North Central Texas College in Corinth, Texas. The award honors leaders who "demonstrate remarkable innovation and dedication to improving the lives of Texans."

Austin College and Grayson County College Partner
Austin College and Grayson County College officials signed a partnership agreement February 15 that will facilitate the process for highly qualified Grayson County College students wishing to transfer to Austin College.

Moore's Book Receives Honor
Professor of History Jacqueline M. Moore's book Cow Boys and Cattle Men: Class and Masculinities on the Texas Frontier, 1865-1900 has been named the winner of the 2010 T. R. Fehrenbach Award, given by the Texas Historical Commission in recognition of outstanding original research, study, and publication in the field of Texas history.

Facts Behind Extreme Weather
North Texas has seen extreme weather this winter, with inches of snow and ice, warnings to avoid driving, and rolling blackouts. Austin College closed the campus for two days to protect students who had just returned for the spring semester, and professors struggled to make it in for classes.

Men's Hoops Set for SCAC Tournament
The men's basketball team is heading back to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament for the fourth consecutive year, having earned the #3 seed in the SCAC West Division with an overall record of 12-13 and a conference mark of 7-9.


Swimming and Diving Earn Academic Honor
The swimming and diving team has been named by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America a Team Scholar Award winner for its outstanding performance in the classroom. The Team Scholar Award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.


Faith Makes SCAC Softball History
Softball player Stefanie Faith '11 made history in the team's doubleheader against Texas Wesleyan University, belting the 29th home run of her career to put her atop the all-time Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference career leader board. Faith also was recently named the SCAC Hitter of the Week.


'Roo Soccer Alumni Games Set for April 30
The Austin College men's and women's soccer teams will be hosting their annual alumni games on Saturday, April 30, coaches Mark Hudson and Paul Burns have announced. The women's game will be at 1 p.m. and the men's game at 3 p.m.
