Austin College 2018 JanServe
Austin College student volunteers will serve at the annual JanServe event, January 17, at their choice of the Special Olympics basketball tournament in the morning or afternoon activities including reading to Sherman Independent School District elementary students or working at the MasterKey Ministries of Grayson County, Inc. after-school program.
This year’s event is themed “SpaceJam” and begins at 9:30 a.m. on campus in the Mason Complex, where SISD Superintendent David Hicks will give the opening address. Austin College First Lady Cece O’Day will volunteer alongside students throughout the day, while Katy ’Roo will be on hand to welcome the expected 400-plus Special Olympians.
The event schedule is split into two half-day opportunities to accommodate JanTerm class schedules. The on-campus tournament will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with games in both Sid Richardson and Hughey gymnasiums. The afterschool service opportunities at various SISD elementary schools or MasterKey Ministries, Inc., will run from 3 to 5 p.m. Student volunteers at SISD elementary schools must complete a background check by January 16.
