Come learn about informal STEM Education as a paid Austin College Noyce Summer Intern.
The Noyce Summer Internship program matches Austin College students with an interest in STEM education with community partners such as museums and summer camps. During the 8-week summer internship Noyce interns serve as assistants to the teachers of programming offered by the host institutions.
Classrooms are only one of the many ways that young people are exposed to STEM. The purpose of this internship program is to help Austin College students interested in pursuing a career in STEM education participate in an informal STEM setting. Interns will learn ways that informal education providers can be integrated into classroom learning and explore how this type of program aligns with Texas State Standards for teachers.
Noyce Summer Interns work approximately 30-40 hrs per week for 8 weeks, depending on site needs, and write weekly and a final reflection about their experiences. Interns are paid a $4000 stipend for the summer. Stipends are paid in two installments, half at the 4-week mark of the internship and the remaining amount after the final reflection is submitted. Interns must provide their own transportation to and from the site. Additional funds are available to support housing and transportation costs if needed.
This summer we have opportunities with the Houston Science Museum, Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History, Heard Museum, and Girl Scouts of America or we will work with interns to find a suitable internship site close to their home.
What our Previous Interns Say
Olivia Trusty ’23
For the NOYCE Internship I was placed as a TA with Duke TIP. There I was able to practice my lesson planning skills, participate in professional development, and develop and strengthen my teaching philosophy. I also witness the importance of strong leadership, communication skills, and the real meaning of “engagement.”
To qualify for the internship you must have taken or currently be enrolled in EDU 115, 225, or the STEM Education Jan Term class and be interested in pursuing teaching certification in a STEM education field (e.g. math or science).
Applications are considered on a rolling basis, ie. each application will be considered individually as it is submitted. All applications must be submitted no later than March 1, 2022 to be considered for a Summer 2022 internship.
Fill out the application answering all of the questions. There are two short answer questions, so you will want to look at the questions and craft your answers carefully before completing the application.
Final summer internship decisions are generally made by the third week in March. All applicants will receive an email notifying them of the committee’s decision by the end of March. Since applications are considered on a rolling basis, notification of a decision can come earlier for application received before the final deadline.
If you have questions, reach out to Stephanie Gould, Coordinator of the Noyce Summer Internship Program or Sandy Philipose, chair of the Education Department.
