COURSE DESCRIPTION
When you hear the term “immigration” what comes to mind? For some individuals, it is a familiar and deeply personal term because they identify as immigrants. For others, the term calls to mind politicians and debates because of its politically contested nature. And for others, it sparks confusion because it can seemingly mean so many things. In this course, students will explore the history and present reality of immigration policy and how it touches all of our lives. The course will also examine the socio-political, economic and legal challenges facing immigrant communities. Additionally, the course will offer a primer in social justice careers by exposing students to professionals and organizations who do the daily work of strengthening immigrant communities and policies, including through legal and social services, organizing and advocacy. The course will begin with an 7-day session of learning on-campus with one-day DFW site visits. Then, we will travel for 6 days (5 nights) to the U.S. Mexico border to meet and learn from migrant rights organizations who engage in grassroots, power-building campaigns as part of their social justice work.
