Faculty: Kim Snipes
Description: Did you know that the largest minority in the United States is the disabled? 26% of US adults and children meet the CDC’s definition of disabled. This percentage is only expected to grow as the long term effects of obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease become more and more prevalent. The purpose of this course is to develop an awareness to understanding certain types of disabilities. Specifically, vision impairment, hearing impairment and physical impairment. Students will also experience what it means to be disabled from a much more intimate perspective by getting around campus blindfolded, in a wheelchair and with noise suppression headphones. Students will also have the chance to learn the braille and American sign language alphabet. This course would be highly suitable for anyone who wants to learn more about the world about disability.
