Austin College has been named a “Best Buy” in Fiske Guide to Colleges 2017. For more than 30 years, the Fiske Guide to Colleges has chosen a select group of schools noted for quality academic offerings and affordable cost for its annual list, which this year includes 21 public and 26 private colleges and universities in the U.S., Britain, and Canada.
“Austin College combines the liberal arts with strong programs in business, education, science, and the health fields,” the guide says. “Don’t look for the ’Roos on a map of the city of Austin. The college is actually near Dallas.”
The two-page Austin College entry in the guidebook includes commentary from the editors, quotes from students, and statistics and numbers that provide the basic details about the college. “AC’s pre-professional programs, most notably premed, are among the strongest in the state,” the editor writes. “Professors here even serve students breakfast at 10 p.m. the night before finals. It’s just another example of the personal style that is typical of this charming Southern institution. “You feel comfortable and safe at Austin College,’ says a sophomore. ‘It becomes your second home.’”
Fiske Guide to Colleges 2017 (ISBN: 978-1-4022-6067-4; JULY 1, 2016; $24.99 U.S.; College Guide/Reference; Trade Paper) is the thirty-third installment of the college guide, created by former New York Times education editor Edward B. Fiske, one of the top independent voice in college admissions.
Austin College, a private national liberal arts college located north of Dallas in Sherman, Texas, has earned a reputation for excellence in academic preparation, international study, pre-professional foundations, leadership development, committed faculty, and hands-on, adventurous learning opportunities. One of 40 schools profiled in Loren Pope’s influential book Colleges That Change Lives, Austin College boasts a welcoming community that embraces diversity and individuality, with more than 36 percent of students representing ethnic minorities. A residential student body of 1,250 students and a faculty of more than 100 allow a 12:1 student-faculty ratio and personalized attention. The College is related by covenant to the Presbyterian Church (USA) and cultivates an inclusive atmosphere that supports students’ faith journeys regardless of religious tradition. Founded in 1849, the College is the oldest institution of higher education in Texas operating under original name and charter.
