When Covenant Society member Roger Fullington arrived at Austin College as a freshman from Greenville, Texas, in September 1948, athletics scholarships were available. He earned his scholarship as manager for the football and basketball teams. Fullington recalled those early days on campus as the most exciting times of his life as he, who had traveled beyond Texas only once to Philmont National Boy Scout Camp in New Mexico, found himself in Sherman with students from throughout the Southwest and among more Presbyterians than he had ever seen in one place!
At mid-term of his junior year, Fullington joined the military, and after several years of service, completed his degree at the University of Texas at Austin . Though he has strong allegiance to UT, and today is a member of UT’s President’s Associates, Chancellor’s Council, and Littlefield Society, Austin College also has a special place in his heart and is remembered as a time of refining values, forming the beginning of a worldview, and establishing friendships that have lasted his lifetime. Fullington has remained an active Austin College alumnus through support as a President’s Council donor and service to the Alumni Board during the 1980s. He also was a 1982 Athletic Hall of Honor inductee.
Often during his real estate and investment career in Dallas, Fullington wished for the time he could repay his Austin College scholarship. Two years ago he made arrangements that would repay that award many times when he created a bequest of $250,000 in his will that shall, upon his death, create a Presidential Scholarship in memory of his parents. “It gives me great pleasure to know that some day a deserving student will have four years of study with a large portion of the cost being defrayed.” Presidential Scholarships provide full tuition to exceptional Austin College students.
Volunteerism has been an important part of Fullington’s life. He works one day each week as intake coordinator at the First Presbyterian Church of Dallas Stewpot, which provides a multitude of services to the homeless. He is a director of the David Raymond Price Foundation of Washington, D.C., which was organized to increase awareness of youth depression and facilitates treatment of those affected by the disease. He also serves as a member of the Advisory Council to the University of Texas Press, where he endowed the Roger Fullington Series in Architecture. He has been active in various capacities during his 45 years as a member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas.
Since those horizon-expanding days in fall 1948, Austin College has remained influential in Fullington’s life. “Austin College was an important part of my life and I will always be grateful for the opportunity to have experienced it.”
