Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Policy UPDATE:
Fall Term Timeline for ESA Applications: For students requesting approval to bring an ESA to campus by their fall move-in date, complete ESA Policy must be submitted by noon on Monday, August 1, 2022. Applications received after this date will be reviewed after September 1, 2022.
Please note that animals are not allowed on campus until approved by the committee reviewing your ESA application.
The college reserves the right to change ESA policies and procedures without notice to ensure best practices for safety relative to COVID-19 developments.
In response to COVID-19, we ask students to maintain appropriate social distancing for their ESAs, including asking others not to pet or hold their animal. Although the risk to animals appears to be low, we encourage ESA owners to protect themselves, their animals, and their campus community.
Current advice from the CDC and the American Veterinary Medical Association suggests that individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 limit contact with their own pets and whenever possible have others provide their care.
If an ESA owner becomes positive for COVID-19 and is quarantined on the Austin College campus, they will not be allowed to isolate with their animal and must arrange for the care of their animal off-campus.
Austin College is committed to making reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008.
Arranging Accommodations
To arrange for accommodations, students must submit the online Public Accommodation Request to the Director of the Academic Skills Center. Documentation in support of specific accommodation requests can be uploaded with the online request form, emailed to asc@austincollege.edu, or delivered in-person to the ASC in Suite 211 of the Wright Campus Center. For inquiries, please contact us at 903.813.2454.
Students must provide current and relevant diagnostic documentation in order to demonstrate the current impact of the disability and to identify appropriate accommodations.
The evaluation report should be on letterhead, dated and signed, indicating the certification or licensure of the evaluator. The report should include a summary of the diagnostic interview, any tests administered with subtest and standard scores, a description of the nature and severity of the substantial limitation to learning (or other major life activity), specific diagnosis, description of the student's history, test behaviors, and score patterns that support the diagnosis, and recommended academic accommodations with a rationale to support them. Criteria to assure documentation is adequate and appropriate to verify eligibility can be found online.
Registering for Accommodations
Each semester, students registered with Access Services must submit a Semester Request through their Accommodate portal. Faculty will receive their students' accommodation forms through their faculty Accommodate portal. Students are then responsible for discussing their approved accommodations directly with their instructors.
Requesting Accommodations
If you think you might need to request accommodations at any time while at Austin College, please complete the Public Accommodation Request form. The Director will contact you when the completed form is received.
