Acclaimed Welsh Baritone to Perform at Austin College
Internationally acclaimed baritone, Jeremy Huw Williams, will be in residence at Austin College to lead a Master Class on October 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Craig Hall and a full recital on October 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Clifford J. Grum Sanctuary in Wynne Chapel on campus. The residency is funded by the Mary Wright Visiting Artist grant; both events are free and open to the public.
In his performance at Austin College, Williams will be accompanied by Dr. John McGinn, Associate Professor of Music. The recital includes Songs of Travel by Ralph Vaughan Williams with texts by Robert Louis Stevenson; Between Sunsets by Hilary Tann with texts by poet e. e. cummings; My Last Duchess by Grace Williams with text by poet Robert Browning; and 3 Welsh Folk Songs arranged by Benjamin Britten.
Williams and McGinn will also perform a newly revised version of McGinn’s 2003 own song cycle, Fire and Straw.
Williams, who lives in Cardiff, Wales, made his debut with Welsh National Opera and has since appeared in more than 60 operatic roles, performing at major venues in North and South America, Australia, China, India, and most European countries.
He has been awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Music from the University of Aberdeen, the Medal of the Order of the British Empire in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours, and the 2022 John Edwards Memorial Award, the most prestigious non-competitive award given in Wales for services to the nation’s music.
The Austin College Epsilon Iota Chapter of Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity will host a reception immediately following the recital.
