SHERMAN, TEXAS— Austin College announces the beginning of its 175th academic year at Opening Convocation on August 21, at 7 p.m. in Wynne Chapel. The convocation event traditionally honors the incoming class of first-year students, transfers, and seniors. Classes begin Tuesday, August 22.
“What an honor to celebrate the 175th year of Austin College,” said Austin College President Steven P. O’Day. “While all institutions of higher learning are facing the impact of a tough economy and changing opinions about the value of education, Austin College stands strong. Each year we welcome a diverse and dynamic student body that is eager to learn and wants to make a difference in the world.”
“This year, we welcome them with extra gratitude for the strong foundation and longevity of this institution,” he continued. “We are grateful for the traditions and proud of the growth of Austin College as an innovative leader in higher education.”
Founded in 1849 under the leadership of Presbyterian Minister Daniel Baker, the school was named after Stephen F. Austin, often called the “Father of Texas,” and funded by a gift from Austin’s sister, Emily. Available records indicate there were only two students in the first graduating class in 1854.
Today, the student body of 1,300 will include 345 first-year and transfer students convening from Texas and 13 other states, as well as Germany, Mexico, Thailand, United Kingdom, and Vietnam. Fifty percent of the Class of 2027 are students of color, 33% are first generation students, and 43% are student athletes.
As the oldest college in Texas operating under its original charter and name, Austin College marks the milestone with the theme Explore. Belong. Make a Difference.
“We feel the theme is the story arc of most students who call themselves ’Roos,” said Austin College Chaplain John Williams. “Students arrive at Austin College from a variety of places and backgrounds begin with exploring themselves, exploring the College and the world beyond the classroom.”
“They find a sense of belonging through smaller groups like athletic teams, fine arts, service organizations, and cultural organizations. No student joins the whole student body all at once,” he said. “There are many times when students are invited and encouraged to think about how their Austin College education can enable them to make a difference in the world.”
As part of the year-long celebration, the College and the Austin College Alumni Board will host a series of volunteer opportunities bringing Austin College community members together–on campus and across the country–in service to others. The service campaign titled “Make a Difference Days” aims to collectively reach 175,000 hours of community service.
Planned celebration events include: City of Sherman Mayor David Plyler will read a proclamation of the 175th milestone at the Sherman City Council meeting on October 16.
Homecoming and Family Weekend, November 3-5, 2023, will feature several events around the milestone including the 175th Year Celebration Dinner, hosted by President Steven P. O’Day on Saturday November 4. The dinner is open to alumni, students, family members, and invited guests from the community.
In late October, a self-guided walking tour will be available to all campus visitors. The 12 tour stops across campus feature QR codes directing guests to historical photos and stories that give a view into life at Austin College from past decades.
Alumni whose college experience and professional achievement embody the “Explore. Belong. Make a Difference.” theme will be featured as speakers at on-campus lectures and academic conferences, many of which are open to the public. Celebration events will continue through Commencement 2024; updates will be available at Austin College 175 Celebration.
