Austin College Announces New Employee Housing Development
Austin College President Steven O’Day has announced the newest construction project on college property – a row of seven, single family homes that will be constructed and designated as transitional housing for new Austin College employees.
The modern craftsman-style homes will be located on the 1300 and 1400 blocks of Grand Avenue. There are three different floor plans, and each design will be approximately 1,800 square feet with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a 2-car garage.
We greatly appreciate the AC Board of Trustees’ recent approval of this exciting project, and we look forward to beginning construction promptly,” O’Day said. “The impact of having new employees of Austin College as residents on our campus and within Sherman will further deepen the educational experiences of our students and be beneficial for everyone in the community.”
The idea of transitional housing is in response to the challenges that new college employees face in finding affordable housing on or near the campus. While these homes are not meant to be permanent residences, they will be available for new employees to rent for a few years while they integrate into the community and learn the area. Not only will the homes offer some competitively priced options for new employees who wish to live close by, but they will also contribute to the ongoing revitalization of the east Sherman neighborhood in which the College is embedded. Construction by Blair Weaver Construction begins immediately with completion and occupancy expected by August 2024.
