The Austin College community is shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Don Rodgers, Austin College associate professor of political science. He suffered a heart attack Sunday afternoon and passed away shortly afterward in the presence of friends and family.
A memorial service has been set for Tuesday, November 15, at 4:30 p.m. in Wynne Chapel. Memorial gifts may be made to Austin College.
“We are stunned by this news and send our deepest sympathies to Kuani and Kyl and their extended family, as well as all those who will be saddened by this tragic loss to the College community,” said Austin College President Marjorie Hass.
Dr. Sheila Amin Gutiérrez de Piñeres, vice president for Academic Affairs, is working with faculty and will make announcements about Don’s classes as arrangements are made. Students should report to his scheduled classes, and faculty will be on hand to provide assistance. Questions or concerns can be directed to Dr. Pineres. She offers sympathy to all Don’s current and former students and encourages them to bring any questions or concerns to the attention of faculty.
Don has been a member of the Austin College faculty since 2003. In addition to his teaching in political science, he served as director of the program in Nonprofit Organizations and Public Service, and as director of the summer grant writing internship program, Social Entrepreneurship for Poverty Alleviation. He accompanied students on Model United Nations trips and January Term courses in Taiwan. He served as faculty advisor for the Amnesty International student organization.
Don’s webpage teaching statement includes the following statement: “My greatest professional joy comes from working closely with students to help them find their passions, pursue knowledge to satisfy their intellectual curiosity, and gain skills while exploring different academic and career interests.” Many students have benefited greatly from his care and commitment to teaching.
