The Austin College community mourns the death of Lois Elaine Tappa on April 5, 2023, in Sherman. Lois came to Sherman and Austin College with her husband, the late Dr. Richard Tappa, when he joined the faculty in 1964. Dr. Tappa taught music and played piano, organ, and carillon at the College until his retirement in 1997. He died in December 2011. The Tappas raised their daughter, Richelle (Shelly) McCauley in Sherman, and stayed in Sherman upon retirement.
Lois was an elementary school teacher and taught private music lessons in her home. She also played cello with the Sherman Symphony for many years. As a lifelong Presbyterian, Lois was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sherman. She was a good friend to the College and the community.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, April 21, at Covenant Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Rev. Lander Bethel of Grand Avenue Presbyterian and Austin College Chaplain Rev. John Williams will officiate.
