Carmen Tafolla ’72 was named the winner of the Texas Institute of Letters’ Lifetime Achievement Award to recognize her distinctive literary accomplishments. As a writer of poetry and fiction, Carmen previously made history as the TIL’s first Latina president.

Carmen Tafolla ’72 was awarded the Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award. This award was established in 1995 to honor authors and illustrators who create literature that depicts the Mexican American experience. It is named in honor of Texas State University distinguished alumnus Dr. Tomás Rivera.
