Instructor: Tom Blake
Description: Let’s spend our three week JanTerm learning about the world of drag, the practice of adopting a persona and performing in clothes different than one’s own gender! We’ll study the history of drag which has existed since at least the fourteenth century, from Kabuki theatre and Shakespeare to the New York ballroom scene and RuPaul’s Drag Race. We’ll look at how drag has been celebrated by and a haven for the LGBTQIA+ community, the ways in which drag has been targeted by recent legislation banning drag acts, and how the drag community has been fighting back. Since we’re in DFW, a world-renowned drag hub, we’ll embark on excursions like drag brunch at Hamburger Mary’s, see a drag show at The Rose Room at S4 in Dallas, and speak with local drag queens.
