COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Irish Sea separates the British Isles: Scotland, England, and Wales on the one side and Ireland on the other. Yet the surrounding shores are closely related through migration, invasion, exchange of ideas and art, competition in sports, and much more. The history of the the Irish Sea is long and storied, fraught with violence and a hard-scrabble life for most. Yet it is likewise marked by beauty of landscape and seascape, culture, literature, music, and other modes of living. On this study trip, we will be looking at the daily life of the present and past, but also the marks of culture and history that have had far-flung impact on the rest of the world. We will be based in five Irish Sea port cities: Glasgow, Liverpool, Belfast, Dublin, and Cork. In Northern Ireland, Ireland, lowland Scotland, and the West of England, we will be seeking out evidence of literary greatness, powerful music, history, and even sports, past and present. Think Druids, St. Patrick, Viking incursions, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, the Irish famine, the Titanic, literary greats, and much more.
