Austin College Legends Weekend 2017
August 4 - 6
The Austin College athletics department, in conjunction with the Athletics A-Board, inducted nine new honorees into the Kangaroo Athletics Hall of Honor, as well as selecting this year’s Coach Joe Spencer Award for Meritorious Service and Lifetime Achievement in Coaching recipient.
Included in this year’s Hall of Honor class are honorary inductees Dr. E. Don Williams, a longtime faculty member at Austin College; Dr. John Prudich, an Austin College alum and the longtime team physician for the ‘Roos; and the late Dr. Jack Pierce, a faculty member at Austin College for five decades and the longtime Faculty Athletics Representative.
Among former student-athletes for the Kangaroos, this year’s class includes:
Dr. Paul Alexander ’60 (Football)
Dale Huggins ’95 (Swimming/Cheerleading)
Maggie Roe ’95 (Basketball)
Bob Sheffield ’70 (Football)
Jeff Timmons ’85 (Baseball/Football)
Katy Williams ’10 (Basketball)
This year, Austin College also honored Mike Sorrells as the 2017 recipient of the Coach Joe Spencer Award. Sorrells graduated from Austin College in 1965, and spent 33 years as the swimming coach at Highland Park High School, his own alma mater. Sorrells retired from that position in 2002, and is a member of the Texas Swimming & Diving Hall of Fame. Over the course of his career, Sorrells coached more than 40 individual and relay state champions, and sent numerous swimmers to the Summer Olympics.
The Austin College Athletics Hall of Honor inductees and Coach Joe Spencer Award honorees were recognized at the annual Legends Weekend, held August 4-6, 2017. Members of the 2016 Hall of Honor class will also be recognized at the event, after severe weather and power outages caused last year’s Legends Gala event to be canceled.
