Mission Statement
The mission of the STEM Teaching and Research (STAR) Leadership program is to embrace the liberal arts tradition and further the purpose of an Austin College education by developing people of influence who are scientifically proficient. This program strives to engage all STEM students in the study and practice of leadership in their personal and professional lives, and promote personal, team, and organizational effectiveness in their STEM courses. Students will have opportunities to practice leadership through the curriculum, the undergraduate research program, and self-directed projects. The STAR Leadership program provides the foundation not only for successful professional careers, but also for increased civic and community engagement.
Leadership Behaviors Taught
The STAR Leadership Program empowers students to have awareness, ability, and commitment to being a leader in their field. Students receive leadership behavior instruction through their content coursework for their major, can practice these behaviors through an applied learning project, and reflect on learning and develop a future plan though a capstone course.
